“I will bring the one-third through the fire, will refine them as silver is refined, and test them as gold is tested. They will call on My name, and I will answer them. I will say, ‘This is My people;’ and each one will say, ‘The Lord is my God.'”
– Zechariah 13:9-
What? You thought being a Christian and living a holy, separated, sanctified life for God was going to be easy? Yep, that’s a mistake we all make. Being set apart isn’t easy. We may be children of the Almighty God, but we are also flesh. That being said, we are not perfect. I am not perfect.
He never promised us we were going to live wonderful lives without hurt or sorrow. But He did promise He would never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5) and that He’d be with us, even to the end (Matthew 28:20).
We may go through the fire, but He is right there with us as we are going through. It may hurt and it may burn, but when we come out of that fire, we are made beautiful and perfect. Just like the refiner’s fire is used to rid silver and gold of every impurity, God will take us through His refining fire to rid us of the impurities in our lives that are keeping us from the beauty He created us in. No, it won’t be easy and yes, it may cause pain, but it is well worth coming out of the flame as a new and pure being.
I have always loved this song, but for a long time I didn’t understand why it said, “Just hold on, our Lord will show up and He will take you through the fire again.” Again. That was the word that got me. Why in the world would He put us through the fire AGAIN? Isn’t once enough? Just recently I realized that no, once is not enough. Remember earlier when I mentioned that we are also made of flesh and therefore, not perfect? That means I am not guaranteed to come out of the fire and never fail again. I am human and I make mistakes. I am not perfect and never will be, so I will continue the rest of my life allowing the ultimate Refiner to take me through the fire and purify me. He will call me His child and I will say, “He is my God.” And the best part is, He will never make me go through alone.
So, remember when you’re standing in the valley of decision and the adversary says for you to give in…look him in the eye and declare that you will never give in because you are allowing the Lord your God to make you pure. You’re weakness will be made strong and you will always come out of the flames a Victorious Conqueror!
THROUGH THE FIRE
by The Crabb Family
So many times I’ve questioned certain circumstances
Or things I could not understand
Many times in trials, weakness blurs my vision
And my frustration gets so out of hand
Its then I am reminded I’ve never been forsaken
I’ve never had to stand the test alone
As I look at all the victories
The spirit rises up in me
And its through the fire my weakness is made strong
He never promised that the cross would not get heavy
And the hill would not be hard to climb
He never offered our victories without fighting
But He said help would always come in time
Just remember when you’re standing in the valley of decision
And the adversary says give in
Just hold on, our Lord will show up
And He will take you through the fire again
I know within myself that I would surely perish
But if I trust the hand of God, He’ll shield the flames again, again
