How To Build Your Own Lemonade Stand Step 1: Grieve

1 For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven:2 a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;3 a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;4 time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;5 a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;6 a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;7 a time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;8 a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 NKJV

For some reason, many people (not just men) are afraid to admit that they are not experiencing any emotion other than joy. Especially Christians. Some feel that it is sinful, or makes them not as good as the next person. However, as the scripture above points out, (Turn, Turn, Turn… Ha, you know it’s stuck in your head now too…) there is a time for everything.

To mourn and grieve is very important to the healing process. Without embracing the truth, acknowledging it, dealing with it, and accepting that something happened you may not ever truly move on. Sure, you can be all happy/smiley and say “Praise the Lord!” after everything everyone says, but that doesn’t mean you’re happy. The body, heart, mind, and soul need to grieve in a healthy matter for a healthy amount of time. It should not be rushed or dragged out.

Unfortunately, really horrible bad things happen in this world: Death, natural and unnatural. Rape. Miscarriage. Child abuse. Illness. Job loss. Divorce. Infidelity. Break ups. Infertility. Muggings. Robberies. Car accidents. Etc, etc, etc… After any of these situations, it is normal to grieve and expected. It is even normal to “mildly grieve” over much smaller less upsetting situations. Anyone who’s had a bad hair cut knows what I’m talking about. (I forgive Karen & Emily for butchering my hair when I was 16, really… but that doesn’t mean I didn’t mourn it for a few days.)

Yes, as Christians we should have joy. Yes, we should see the positive and not the negative. But we are also commanded that there IS a time to mourn. That means it’s accepted. Should you not allow this process, you may miss out on a complete healing.

Just remember, it’s called GOOD GRIEF for a reason. And that prayer is NEVER a bad thing. The more the better!

Becky: My Daughter, My Joy

Dear Becky,

I was going to write you a poem to tell you how proud i am of you, but i thought you deserved better. From the day you were born you have been my joy, I could not be more proud of you than I am today; To see the work that God has done in you and how he has blessed your life makes me so proud to call you my daughter. I can sit back today and tell you how much I love my nieces but when God gave me a daughter he gave me his very best. There is nothing about you that I would change. From the first time I held you in my arms you had stolen my heart, and as I sit here today I can honestly say you still hold it in your hands. I could pray for God to send you home but then I would only be interfering with His plan for your life, and that is not something I want to hinder. Instead I will choose to sit back and watch  the work in your life unfold. Your obedience to God’s word will always keep you blessed. I use to worry about you but I know God has put His angels in charge over you. I know when I close my eyes at night that His eyes are on you and you are going to be just fine.I want you to know that the distance between us will never change how much I love you and how proud I am of you. Nothing you do or accomplish goes unnoticed. My eyes are still on you just like they were when you were first born.and they still look at you with amazement. I AM ALWAYS IN AWE OF WHAT GOD MAY HAVE PLANNED FOR YOU.  Sometimes I think you are the only thing i did right in my life, so what ever it is you are doing please don’t stop. Remember where God has pulled you from and build on that.  And always remember that you are my daughter, my joy and I wouldn’t change that for anything in the world!

Love you forever

Your Mother

I Won A Prize!!!

In July of 2004, I made friends with a group of people in an IHOP. If you know me, this comes as no surprise. We ended up merging our tables and the other group came and sat with my group. One of these persons is a guy who we will refer to as “Chuck”…

That night was full of fun and laughter. I kept in touch with a few via phone, text, myspace, email, etc. “Chuck” was one of them. A few years later we reacquainted. I was busy with work/life and never thought twice about him. He was dating Julie, who I didn’t know.

Fast forward a few months: “Chuck” is about to leave for deployment (He was a Marine) and wants to meet up, just as friends. Before you know it, “Chuck” and I are dating. Only mentioned an ex-girlfriend a few times. Leaves for Iraq, and while there: rips my heart to shreds. I was left hurt, very confused, and angry. I was determined before that to never fall for anyone again, and I did… only to be let down.

In the time we were dating before he left, I got to know some of his friends. One was his best friend’s girlfriend, Le Anna. When “Chuck” and I broke up, she insisted I come along on a girls night. She brought 2 other girls. Steph and….. Julie, who also brought her now husband. I realized within seconds she was the girl in the pictures with “Chuck” a few months before I started dating him, but we were very cool with each other and quickly became friends. Before the end of the night, she ended up consoling me, and we both insisted we had to remain in contact.

That was almost 5 years ago. Now, I could easily look back on all of that and say “God, why? Why did you allow my heart to be broken?” However, I look at it like this, “God, thank you for the gift of friendship you have given me in these 3 women. Especially Julie. She’s always there right when I need her with a wise word, song lyric, or scripture. It was all worth it to know these girls!”

God knows what he’s doing, people. All the time. Even when we aren’t serving him at the time. And what may seem like something horrible in your midst, never forget that something good can come from it. Even the Bible states this:

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

Romans 8:28 NKJV

A month after I met Julie, I met and married my husband Bobby who is the love of my life. I could have NEVER imagined that I would ever find someone like him. He is a dream come true and one of the greatest gifts God ever gave me. I quickly forgot about “Chuck”, and still had 3 awesome new friends! A few months later, Julie and Chad were married and remain to be very happy.

You know what that means…

“Chuck” is apparently “Good Luck”… If you’re single and tired of it, I suggest looking him up… Just kidding. Save yourself the trouble, don’t. Just be friends with us instead.

Young Love

Young Love
By: Diania Comstock
July, 1986

A boy and a girl ran off to wed
They didn’t expect what lied ahead
Happy and excited, though only sixteen
They had no idea what marriage could mean

A few months later, things started to change
The girl sat at home and the boy acted strange
Days went by when he wasn’t around
She began to wonder if it was new love he had found

The girl decided it’s time to get out
Then she learned what families are about
Soon she won’t be home all alone
In a few months, she’ll bring a new member home

She told the boy, she thought he’d be glad
He just started screaming, she knew he was mad
She won’t give up now, she decided to stay
If it was to work, she’d find a way

Times were hard and money was tight
But the girl was strong, she knew she was right
Months went by, she started to show
And now even Daddy was starting to glow

All he talked about was having a son
And he wanted to prove it to everyone
A year has passed since the new baby came
But this one didn’t get daddy’s name

Still running around and out having fun
This time she decided, we are done
She left him a letter with his ring beside it
It’s over this time, I’m not going to hide it

She thought of her mother, how she’d like to go home
But mother had told her you’re now on your own
Her friends couldn’t help her, they had their own life
And now she was sorry she became a wife

What would she do and where would she go
Just like before, she was starting to show
Now a mommy and still very young
She started to realize what she had done

Tears started falling, she tried not to cry
She thought of the boy, how could he lie
She went back home and found her man
There he sit with the ring in his hand

He started to kiss her, he thought she was gone
He told her he loved her and where she belonged
With life back in order and a home full of joy
The family will welcome their new little boy

Temptation and trust must fill the heart
Without the two, they’ll be torn apart
Love is something that needs to grow
Both husband and wife play a big role

How To Build Your Own Lemonade Stand: When Life Gives You Lemons & God Makes Lemonade

We’ve all heard the old saying:

“When life gives you lemons, make lemonade…”

What does this mean exactly? Basically, to take something sour & bitter and turn it into something sweet. A negative into a positive. As Christians, we deal with this on a different level as we are to spread God’s love to a dying world.

In every day situations, this may be easy to do. But what about when the unthinkable happens? Something so traumatic, that finding the pros is completely impossible when there are so many cons lined up against you? It becomes difficult to find the good with the bad, and to show love and be positive to others when we feel so full of hurt/anger/sadness and negativity.

I’ll be the first to say, this is not my favorite subject to write about. It has taken me a long time to learn this lesson myself. But when God says “write”, by golly, you better write.

So, from here we will begin a Tuesday series. I hope you’ll follow along and read what the Lord has told me to write and be blessed.

Finding Home

One of the times we moved, we literally moved, as you can see.

In my life, I have moved approximately 47 times. Yes, you read that right: 47!

No, I wasn’t a military kid. And though my Grandpa was a pastor and I lived in his home, from the time I was born until the time he died he was pastoring the same church. In fact, the majority of my childhood was in the same home from the age of 6 until 14 and I attended the same elementary school for all 7 years. Life has just “happened” and as a result, I’ve moved. A lot.

The majority of those moves have been in the last 16 years. Many times I find myself wishing I never had to move again, but such is the life of being a renter and not a home owner. I long for home, to put it simply. But where and what is “home”?

Could it be where you grew up? Just a place you store your “stuff”? Is it where your family resides, or the opposite, as far away from them as possible? Is it a brick and mortar building, on wheels, or non existent all together?

During a very dark time in my life, I lived in my van. (Before you even ask, no, it wasn’t down by the river.) While enduring that circumstance, I realized very quickly how often people take the little things for granted. I learned then that “home” does not have to be something tangible. So I know that is not what I’m looking for. (On a side note, no, in my count of 47 I am not including every time I drove my van from one place to another. Oh, c’mon, go ahead and laugh. You know you want to. I do!)

The Bible tells us this:

19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal;20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Matthew 6:19-21 NKJV

There is an old saying, “Home is where the heart is”. If we’re layin’ up our treasures in that home above… and that is where our heart is… Looks like Heaven is “Home”.

I don’t know about you, but home is looking better every day. Being as homesick as I am, I’m going to do everything I can to reach my destination. How about you?

When God Says No…

We’ve all been there. Had a need, want, or wish that we prayed for fervently. Begging God to just let this one thing go our way. Only to find that God didn’t agree, and just flat out said “NO!”

Naturally, sometimes as humans we become upset. We don’t understand WHY God would ever not grant us the wishes of our heart. “Doesn’t God want me to be happy?” we ask, assuming that God couldn’t possibly know our side of it.

As difficult as it can be, the key to remember is that God is all knowing. He sees the big picture, not just the here and now like we see it. Of course he wants the best for us! But just as our children think cookies make a good meal, we know better. He doesn’t want us to settle for less.

When I was young, and I mean YOUNG, there was something I prayed for. I could NOT understand why God was not giving me what I wanted. Surely He knew the dream I had from the time I was a tot, why wouldn’t He just give it to me? I’ll tell you why: because it was not His will. He had something so much better in store for me. I didn’t understand it at the time, but boy do I now! And let me just say Thank You LORD for not giving in to my stupidity! 😉

It does not always go this way. Sometimes the reason our prayers go unanswered is not clear. It is not for us to know while we are here on earth, but as the old song says “We’ll understand it better by and by…” In the mean time, thank our Heavenly Father for loving us enough to say “no” instead of spoiling us. For were it not for the “nos”, we wouldn’t be thankful when He says, “YES!”

Getting Caught Sticky Handed

Okay ladies, how has your week been so far?

Remember my challenge I sent out to all of you on Monday? I won’t lie, it’s been tough to follow through with. I have not made a single pot of coffee (which means it’s a miracle anyone in this family survived) or pampered myself to more than the expected shower… which was SUCH a blessing, especially when I have a 2 month old. I did, however, relax while holding the baby, sipping a Diet Coke and thanking God for his many blessings. I took time with my children when they just wanted to bang on their musical instruments to sing to the Lord. Hey, at least it was beautiful to Him and us. I’m sure it wasn’t to anyone else. 😉 As I fed the baby in the middle of the night I sneaked in a quick reading of a few scriptures. I prayed as I walked the floor, as I did dishes, as I fell asleep, and while I woke and readied myself for the day. (I should note, readying myself for the day only involves changing my clothes, brushing my teeth, and washing my face. Gross, I know. But hey, in a month it’ll all be different. The joys of mothering an infant with GERD. I love it though.) I also prayed a LOT while re-potty training my 3 year old, but I digress…

But what about you? Did you try? I did. Not as great as I would like, but I still tried. And you know, that’s okay. We’re going to have good days, bad days, and everything in between. But I’d still like to know how you did! Please share!

Now, with the weekend coming up, I want you to make a point to spend one on one time with your husband if you are blessed to have one. Talk, look each other in the eye, and enjoy time with each other. Actually listen to what he has to say. Don’t fold laundry while you talk, don’t check your facebook or twitter. Focus on him. Just one hour, I know time can be strained, but make time. You’ll feel so much better. As you are talking, thank God that you are blessed with someone, as many women are not.

Continue to strive for those Sticky Handed Moments!

Coming up Monday: The Prayer of The Sticky Handed

Empty Nest Syndrome

Unlike the rest of the wonderful ladies that I get the pleasure to blog with my children are all grown, actually thought I would enjoy the peace and quiet when my husband and I were free to do what ever we wanted. “WRONG”, depression hit like a ton of bricks, for over a year I could barely function… My daughter moved away, starting with baby steps, first to Victorville then to Bakersfield, and on to Tennessee,, now even further, they are pastoring in Illinois, I feel blessed knowing she is serving the Lord… but not being able to watch my grandchildren grow up is the hardest thing I have ever had to face… I feel my grandchildren are my greatest accomplishment……..They are truly my joy.. each child with their own personality
I would give anything to go back and spend time with my children.. knowing what I know now things would have been totally different. I would of had them in church from the moment they were born… I Try so hard to tell people how important it is if you want to raise a loving caring child then you need to teach him the love of Jesus…. It’s our job to do just that… I made so many mistakes, but by the grace of God I have let that go, I know my Lord and savior has forgiven me, and with that I can go on doing the work he has called me to do… I feel it’s so important for young mothers to know that the house work is not all that important… those dishes will be there, those unmade beds aren’t going anywhere either… So go ahead and get your hands sticky with those lil guys, your making a memory every time you do… and you can bet they love every minute of it…. Do I feel worthy to be able to be a part of this lil group, ‘NO’ but I do feel blessed, And pray for me, because I get very nervous when I think about blogging, if you have read some of the post from the other ladies then you will know why…… I’m sure God knows my desires and He has never let me down. so please bare with me.. God isn’t finished with me yet. You will find most of my post are poems… My desire is to write a book, with short stories and poems mixed, I honestly believe in my heart that the four of us ladies could write a book, It wasn’t by accident we got here, God is good and he has a plan for us. He put the four of us together for a reason, and I’m ready to find out what that reason is …. I just got to figure out how to do it all, my computer skills are not the best…. Any way I just wanted to get acquainted with you all and let you know you will be hearing more from… go wash those hands and get ready to lift them up… After all praising Jesus is all that really matters….

love,

My Child

While working one day, I stopped to pray
Cause things were bringing me down
As I bowed my head, thought of things I dread
I felt my knees hit the ground

As time went by, I started to cry
The Holy Spirit filled the air
He said, “My child, let go”
I felt the tears flow
And my sins I started to share

As He held my hand, He said I understand
My child, you’ve been forgiven
The weight you carry is why I tarry
And now you can go on living

There’s a reason I’m here, to dry your tear
There’s joy to restore in your heart
You’re part of my plan
I hope you understand
You have been from the start

All you go through is planned out for you
It’s a season for you to grow
I won’t walk away or let you stray
But there are things you need to know

My Word is your light, so you need to fight
Stay strong in all that you do
Never give up, just lift your cup
And know I’ll see you through

If you need to see where I might be
My child, just open your eyes
I’ve told you before that I love you more
That should come as no surprise

After all my child
What more do you need
Then a Father who gives His best
If you come to me first and seek my face
I’m sure I can handle the rest

Nothing you do can turn me away
I’m the maker of the air you breathe
Till you take your last breath
And I carry you home
I have no reason to leave

So hold on my Child, till I call you home
And remember I’m always near
There’s no reason to worry
If your prayers reach home
I assure you I’m always here

All that you’ve done I keep in my heart
You’re a treasure in Heaven above
So open your life and allow me back in
And I’ll fill your heart with love
