How to Start a Prayer Journal

wpid-2014-08-30-18.07.20.jpg.jpeg

1. No rules-

This is your prayer journal. It can be however you want it to be. It can include whatever you want to include in it. It doesn’t necessarily have to be prayer requests or prayers at all times. It can be plain. It can be fancy. It doesn’t matter. All that matters is that it’s YOURS.

2. Write from the heart-

Keeping a prayer journal is simply a way of putting what’s in your heart on paper. Don’t try to use flowery words to make it sound dignified or professional. You’re not publishing a novel. You’re expressing your soul.

3. It’s not a diary-

A prayer journal isn’t about drama. It’s something between you and God and anyone else with whom you choose to share it. It isn’t a place for you to rant about this person or that person or this situation or that situation. If you do this, you’ll eventually get through that season or over that situation, and when you look back on the drama instead of the prayer….you’ll cringe. By all means, write your heart and how you feel. However,  you don’t want your words to be demeaning. Even if no else ever sees them besides you and God. Trust me.

4. Don’t stress-

If you haven’t written anything in a month, don’t worry about it. It’s not about daily writing or even weekly writing. I started mine in a regular single subject notebook over a year ago and I’ve only used half of the notebook. You write in it whenever you feel led to write in it. If this is only once every 6 months, good for you! As I said earlier, there are no rules.

**********************************************************************************************************************************

wpid-2014-08-30-17.59.07.jpg.jpeg

I started my journal about a year and a half ago and I truly enjoy it. Like I said, my journal is technically a single subject notebook, not the top of the line deluxe edition journal. I only write in it when I feel the desire to…I don’t force it. Some pages have doodles. Some doodles are random, some actually pertain to whatever I’ve written about. Some entries are songs God recently gave me that I want to write down so I don’t forget. Some entries are about a word someone gave me from the Lord. Some are me baring my soul about certain feelings, situations, circumstances. Some are lists of people I need to pray for. Some are thoughts or God drops that I eventually end up sharing with you all on our blog. I even wrote about my #oneverse and #onescripture for 2014 in my prayer journal. At the end of 2013, I wrote a page of memories, good and bad, happy and sad. Some pages are nothing but Bible scriptures that I need to indulge in at the moment. Some pages have quotes that encourage me or challenge me.

wpid-2014-08-30-18.10.00.jpg.jpeg

Writing helps you remember.

Writing helps me to remember. I love going back and reading old entries. I can remember the hardships that God brought me through. I can remember the blessings He showered upon me. I can see answered prayers. I can see worship. I can see growth. It’s not for everyone but it’s something I relish. And I hope one day at the end of my journey to pass my prayer journal on to my children and grandchildren.

Do you have a prayer journal? Share your thoughts with us!

Hannah’s Prayer: 1 Samuel 1:1 – 2:11

Read about Hannah’s Prayer in the Bible! It can be found in the book of 1 Samuel 1:1 – 2:11.

In November 2000, my husband, Matt, and I decided that we wanted to try and have another baby. So I went off the birth control pill and we started the process of adding another child into the Williams household. Already having a daughter in the mix, I desperately wanted a little boy. Someone who looked like my husband, and had an imagination like Calvin from the comic strip Calvin & Hobbes. We had gotten pregnant pretty quickly with Sarah, so I expecting a quick turn around this time. Yet, every month I would either start my cycle or have a negative pregnancy test.

Feeling pretty discouraged I talked with my mom. She had read an article about Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). She thought I had that and wanted me to take the test in the magazine. So I did. It completely described me to a T. I went to my Dr with the article in hand, and discussed the problem with him. He thought there was also a good chance that I might have PCOS, and referred me to an Endocrinologist. The day of my appointment, Matt and I nervously went in to the new Dr. He wanted to have an ultrasound of my ovaries. Honest to God, they looked like a bag of marbles. He said, “You do have PCOS. Instead of producing eggs, your body is producing cysts. If you are going to have another child, it will have to be through fertility drugs.” He gave me a regime of pills to take to get my body back under control. During this time, I began to read the story of Hannah in 1 Samuel and felt her pain and longing for a son. I began to pray her prayer, as well as her praise. For even if I didn’t get a son, a still had a beautiful daughter whom God saw fit to give me.

Ask for anonymous Christian advice from the Mommy Panel at Raising Sticky Hands To Heaven - RaisingStickyHands.com

Three months later, we went back for a check up, to our dismay the pills he gave me didn’t work. He said that he wanted to start the fertility process with us. He gave us the run down of what that would entail. It seemed like there was so much to process at one time. Then he handed me a ton of prescriptions and told me to start taking them right away. One was to start my cycle, as I had not had one in 4 months. He said to me, “First take a pregnancy test. It will be negative, but better safe than sorry.”

Matt and I walked to our car like zombies. I looked at all of the prescriptions and said to him, “I don’t know if I want to do this.” He felt the same way. So we decided that we would spend 1 week praying and talking with our family regarding the fertility, as this would be a big deal to them too. So we did, we talked with people who had one child and asked the pros and cons, we also talked to quite a few only children. As the week wore on, Matt and I truly felt that God was telling us not to take the fertility drugs. Matt and I obeyed! It was not an easy thing to trust Him with this, but we did.

On September 10, 2001, I had lunch with our babysitter and told her our decision. She prayed with me and said that God was in control and we were doing good by listening. She also suggested that I take the pills to start my cycle as it had been too long since I had one. So I went and bought a test and had that prescription filled.

At 5:50 a.m., September 11th, Matt woke me up and asked me to listen to the new that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. So I got up, went to the bathroom, and took my pregnancy test. As the radio announcer said, “Oh my god, another plane just hit the 2nd tower!” I was looking at a positive pregnancy test. I was stunned. I grabbed the phone and desperately tried to call Matt. After 20 minutes he called me and asked what was going on. I told him I was pregnant. He said, “No, in the news. WHAT?!”

I really tried not to get myself excited over the test, because they had been wrong before. So I waited until my doctor’s office was open and went in for a blood test. One hour later, I got a call that I was truly expecting. It was a miracle. I recited Hannah’s praise right there at work. I always say 9/11/2001 was a very bittersweet day for me.

In May of 2002, I gave birth to our son, Lucas James Williams. He was 6 lbs. 9 oz., and 20 inches long. Yes, he kind of looks like Matt with the blond hair and hazel eyes, and acts very much like Calvin (I now understand Calvin’s mom). He also wants to be a firefighter and join the military, something he has said since he was 4.

Hannah's Prayer

I want to now fast forward to October 2013. I had the opportunity to take a tour in Israel. Our guide took us to Ramah, where Hannah and Elkannah lived. They recently found Hannah’s spring. Now I know in 1st Samuel the prayer written down took place in Shiloh, but also being in the situation Hannah was in, I could see her praying at this spring, as other mother’s bathed their children. Close by was a fig tree, and I could see her with Samuel on her knee teaching him about God. I began to weep and shared my story with the group. God is so good, and He gave each of us a small glimpse into scripture that touched us to the very core of our being.

Sherry - Hannah's Prayer

What was even better, was 2 days later, our guide took us to Ancient Shiloh, where they are uncovering the site of the Tabernacle. This is the place where Hannah cried out to God for a son. This is where Eli told her prayer would come true. The best thing about this is the day we went to Ancient Shiloh, we had a new guide, and he didn’t know about what I spoke at Hannah’s spring. So I received a double blessing on my trip. Isn’t it amazing that God cares about us so much that He will give us a special glimpse into His word. A story that I’ve heard hundreds of times, yet it has taken on a new meaning. Even now, as I read the first two chapters of first Samuel, I can see Hannah praying at the Tabernacle, I can see her teaching Samuel and she weaned him. I can see him running around the fig tree.

Tree - Hannah's Prayer

I want you know that even if you are going through a time of longing for a child, God is in control. It may mean fertility treatment. It may mean a miracle like mine, and so many others. God is in every one of our stories. I beg of you, listen for God’s voice. Read his word. There are numerous stories like Hannah in the Old Testament.

I have added pictures of Hannah’s spring, the fig tree near the spring, and Ancient Shiloh, where the tabernacle sat for nearly 400 years. The big stone square is the sacrificial altar they are digging up.

Should We Be Surprised?

As we turn on the news, it seems that all we see is fighting, conflict, turmoil, and mass chaos. It has become a part of everyday life for some, mostly in other countries. The weather is disastrous and you never know what is going to happen in what part of the nation. It’s all unusual. We’ve had a record setting winter in our neck of the woods. We haven’t had this much ice in and below freezing temperatures in over 30 years. Totally NOT normal for our area. Should we be surprised to see and hear all of this is going on?

Should we be surprised with our unusual weather, the state of our world, and more? - Raising Sticky Hands To Heaven - RaisingStickyHands.com

In Matthew 24, Christ’s’ disciples ask Him, “what shall be the signs of Thy coming and the end of the world?” To which He answered, “take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in My name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. And you shall hear of wars and rumors of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all of these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes in divers places. These are the beginning of sorrows.” -( Jesus goes on in much more detail, so it is worth reading for yourself. There is no better way, than to get in God’s Word on your own.)

I want to draw in on what Christ has prepared us for. Again, I ask the question, should we be surprised to see and hear what has been going on in the world? No. Jesus gave us warning that these things were going to take place as we see the last days approaching. He said, “take heed that NO man deceive you.” Our nation has turned into one gigantic mess pile of deception. Jesus is, and will always be, the ONLY way of salvation. There are NO OTHER gods before Him. No other being, person, etc. can equal to Him. His blood was shed so that we can have life more abundantly. Jesus was the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. He loved me enough, you enough, to die on that rugged cross over 2000 years ago and to rise again! To go prepare a place for us! Wow! Let NO ONE deceive you into thinking that there is another way to heaven.

Take heed that NO man deceive you! Matthew 24 - Raising Sticky Hands To Heaven - RaisingStickyHands.com

He also said that we would hear of wars and rumors of wars, but to see that we not be troubled. Jesus said that these things would have to take place, nation would rise against nation. There has been so much turmoil between different countries. It doesn’t involve one or 2 countries, but several get drawn in and then the US gets involved. Famine, pestilence, and earthquakes in divers places. Food prices are going through the roof due to droughts in parts of the nation, flooding in other parts, etc. “These are the beginning of sorrows.” For those who are un-believers or who are not prepared, times are going to get a lot worse. Believers know where their hope is! I’ve never seen the righteous forsaken, nor His seed begging bread! (Psalms 37:25)

It’s not going to be long before Christ returns to take His bride home. Prepare ye the way of the Lord.

Anticipation

Starting The Year Off Right

When I was a kid, I would take a salt shaker to the garden and pick the reddest tomato I could find, stand in the tomato patch and eat the first fruit of the season. Helping Daddy plant, weed, and water the garden every summer was not work to us. To me, the work came after the harvest with all the cutting, chopping, boiling jars & lids, and being confined to the kitchen. Listening for all those lids to pop as the jars cooled meant good eating when winter came. Planting meant getting our hands dirty, but anticipating the harvest kept us working!

Anticipation - Judye's One Word for 2014 - Raising Sticky Hands To Heaven

As we continue to plant the Word of God, till the ground where it was planted, and weed out things that choke spiritual growth, we anticipate the greatest Harvest of all ! I can hear those lids popping now.

He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming quickly.”
Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus! – Revelation 22:20 NKJV

Danielle’s One Word For 2014 – Joy

Click here to see more about how we are Starting The Year Off Right.

I’ve got the joy joy joy down in my heart! Down in my heart!!

Joy to the world!! The Lord has come!

Joy is a gift from God when we ask Jesus to be our Lord & Savior.

Joy is a fruit of the Spirit! Did you know we all have every fruit of the Spirit in us? These gifts are in us! All of them, find them & use them!!

Joy is, as defined by the dictionary as the emotion of great delight or happiness caused by something exceptionally good or satisfying; keen pleasure; elation! (Noun)

Starting The Year Off Right

This year my plan is to find the joy in everything. To Gloify God & enJOY him forever. I never knew what joy was until I asked Jesus into my heart. My life has not been the same since I became a Christ follower about 8 years ago. 9 years ago I had severe depression. One morning I woke up & brought my daughters to school. When I got home from bringing them, I drove into our garage, I shut the door to the garage & thought about how bad my life was. As I was thinking this I was breathing deeply to make sure I was breathing in enough exhaust. Just as I was starting to loose consciousness I clearly heard God say to me “this is not the plan I have you for you my child”, I opened the garage door ran out of my van & called my husband to ask him for help. I was in the hospital for 8 weeks. God led us to wonderful doctors who helped me. I told you that to tell you this, I found the joy! I found the joy! I found the joy in that God spoke to me. My weak belief that God actually exists & that He loves me! I was healed. He healed me!! God never leaves us! Even when we fall flat on our faces we can take comfort that we have fallen into His lap. How great is that?! I find joy everywhere now.

When I am having a horrible, awful day, I stop & think “find your joy”. Find your joy today. Back in March my Nana went to Heaven. As sad & broken hearted as I was there was joy knowing she was with God. I found the joy in how much she loved us! Yesterday I was overworked, stressed out & needed a break from everything. This morning I was reminded of my joy. I watched my daughters sleep.

I think we confuse joy & happiness. When I was much younger I was happy to drink & do drugs & not care about anyone but myself, my children & my husband, in that order. No one else mattered. That’s what made me happy, only doing for me & my family. I was all about number one. The website I am second uses the phrase I am second, I say that all the time. I’ll say to my husband, kids, friends, my youth group youth-thanks you’re 2nd best! Or we’re #2. Someone was mortified I said that, she asked me why wouldn’t I tell the person they are #1? I then have the opportunity to tell them about Jesus! He is #1 we are #2

Jesus tells us in the Gospel of Mark 12:30&31- 30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’31 The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

That’s where our joy is! Loving God with everything we have. In doing that we can love our neighbors. By reading God’s word we know we can trust Him. His deeds reveal His character. We love because He first loved us!

There is joy in everything. Watching your children sleep, seeing the sunset over the ocean, watching the snow fall, watching the birds fly & hearing them sing! Watching a baby & I’m just astounded by His creation!! As hard as it is when things are bad for us there is joy hiding there we just have to find it, sometimes it takes such a long time to do so.

Joy - Raising Sticky Hands To Heaven

My goal for #2014 is to seek out the joy. Look for it & if I can’t find the joy I remind myself- for God so loved Danielle He gave up His only Beloved Son! I frequently post on Facebook this simple reminder- you are Loved!!! you are Loved!!! Once for you & once for me. The excessive exclamation points? One for the Father, one for the Son & one for the Holy Spirit. Today my joy was watching my girls asleep. I am constantly amazed by my children & the gift that they are. Where is your joy!!!

James 1:2-4
2 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, 3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.
4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

Have a wonderful day dear ones!

Angie’s Scripture For #Verse2014: Philippians 4:13

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

-Philippians 4:13-

If you know me personally, you may think I’m “cheating” by using this scripture for my #Verse2014. It has been my favorite since I was a little girl and I have it on display in various parts of my home. However, the truth is I prayed about what scripture to keep in focus this upcoming year, and this one kept coming to mind. It wasn’t until I was settled in on a One Word (serve) for this year that I was sure that Philippians 4:13 was the exact scripture I needed to remember day in and day out.

Starting The Year Off Right

2014 holds a lot of changes for our family and for me personally. None of them will be easy. There are habits to break, routines to put in place, goals to reach, and a lot of growth to take place. No is not an option on any of these changes. They must happen. While some of them, like getting in shape after spending most of 2013 very sick, seem impossible, I know that with Jesus’ help I can make it happen.
We’ve all heard the explanation of this verse in a sermon, sunday school, children’s church, Bible study, youth group, etc… It doesn’t say some things. It doesn’t say most things. It says ALL things. I can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens me!

I can raise my children the way God wants me to. I can accomplish the goals that seem so far out of reach. I can take my health back. I can beat insomnia. I can serve God the way I should even on the days my flesh wants to take over. I can do it all, but not on my own. Not at all on my own. I need Jesus to help me. I need Jesus to guide me. I need Jesus to open the doors that would close in my face. I need Jesus.

I can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens me. <a href=Philippians 4:13" src="http://raisingstickyhands.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Philippians-4-13.jpg" width="750" height="454" srcset="https://raisingstickyhands.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Philippians-4-13.jpg 750w, https://raisingstickyhands.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Philippians-4-13-300x181.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" />

To help me remember, I’m creating events in my calendar at random times throughout the year to pop up and remind me. Who knows, maybe they’ll pop up at just the right time. 😉

On a final note, I want to mention that Emily and I did not discuss what our scriptures would be. We just so happened to choose scriptures out of the same chapter in Philippians. (Click here to read Emily’s #Verse2014.) How cool is that? I love when God pieces things together that way.

Emily’s Scripture For #Verse2014: Philippians 4:11

Want to see more posts from us about how we are trying to start the year off right? Click here!

Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatsoever state I am, to be content:

 -Philippians 4:11-

I want to start by saying that I will definitely have more than just one verse throughout the year. There are times or seasons when a particular verse or passage is what my spirit needs and I will devour that verse until that season is over. Just because this is the verse I chose for 2014 doesn’t mean I will lose sight of the bountiful buffet of God’s word that is available for me. I may have a focus verse, but I will still feast on His entire word.

Starting The Year Off Right

Now on to the WHY. Why did I pick this verse? Because I am so tired of discontentment. Discontentment is one of the biggest weapons that the enemy throws at women. All women. We become bombarded with thoughts like, “I wish my house was as nice as…” or “I wish I could lose 15 pounds, then I would look prettier,” or “I wish my kids were that driven,” or “I wish we made as much money as the Joneses,” or “I wish I had nicer clothes,” or “Insert your own example here.” The possibilities are endless!

The devil will send one of these little thoughts along and once we let it creep in, it begins to plant a seed of discontentment. Then another thought comes along and waters the seed. Yet another one comes along and before we know it, discontentment is what rules our life. And here’s another little tidbit about discontentment—it’s fruit is bitter and ugly!

Comparison is the thief of joy.”- Theodore Roosevelt.

How true this statement is! I read this statement sometime early in 2013 and although it stuck with me, I still struggled/struggle with discontentment. And most of my discontentment stems from comparison. I’ve decided that I don’t want comparison to have any hold over me anymore. Throughout 2014, I’m not giving up my joy for discontentment.

Emily's #OneVerse For 2014: Phillipians 4:11

Besides, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” (Psalm 23:1) The word want in this verse means lack. So let’s look at it this way, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not lack.” As long as I allow the Lord to shepherd me, I shall not lack anything that I need. That’s why I am choosing to be content in whatsoever state I am in. In verse 19 of Philippians 4, God’s promises continue, “But my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

So maybe I can’t afford monthly pedicures like some women. So maybe I don’t have the perfect show house that appears to be decorated by Martha Stewart. So maybe I don’t look like the women in the latest fashion magazines. So what! The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want… In this I will be content!

Receive

“49So Jesus stood still and commanded him to be called. Then they called the blind man, saying him, ‘Be of good cheer. Rise, He is calling you.’ 50And throwing aside his garment, he rose and came to Jesus. 51So Jesus answered and said to him, ‘What do you want Me to do for you?’ The blind man said to Him, ‘Rabboni, that I may receive my sight.’ 52Then Jesus said to him, ‘Go your way; your faith has made you well.’ And immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus on the road.”

Mark 10:49-52

Receive

Take a look at verse 52 and read it over again.

It doesn’t say, “And immediately he saw.”

It doesn’t say, “And immediately his eyes were opened.”

It doesn’t say, “And immediately he was healed.”

It says, “And immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus…..”

He RECEIVED his sight! Many times God has already given us what we need, or what it is we’ve been seeking after. We just haven’t stopped to receive it.

Today, let’s learn a lesson…not from ‘The Blind Man,’ but from ‘The Man who Once was Blind.’ Receive whatever it is God is giving you!

Karen’s ONE Word For 2013

As a part of our “One Word” series for this year, I thought long and hard to find the right “one word” for me. I had so many come to mind, like Redeemed, Forgiven, Blessed, but didn’t really feel drawn to them. Then as I was reading my Bible, “one word” struck out at me: LOOSE

There are many definitions of the word loose, but the versions that I chose, was the verb form.

loose – (in verb form) free from a state of confinement, restraint, or obligation
Loosed – released; to be free from restraint

Matthew 18:18 says,

“Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on on earth shall be bound in Heaven; and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in Heaven.”

It goes on to say that if two or three touch and agree, it shall be given unto them. It got me thinking about the many different chains of bondage that are holding people prisoner today. Chains of darkness from sin and they don’t know what to do or where to go.

One of the references of “LOOSE” that stands out in my mind, is when when Lazarus had died. Jesus came the two miles from Jerusalem to Bethany, to raise him from the dead. The body of Lazarus has already been wrapped in graveclothes and the burial preparations already made. Jesus call Lazarus forth, out of the grave!

John 11:44 says: “And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.”

Just like that, his bondage was loosed and he was able to live again!

Isaiah 58:6 “Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?”

God doesn’t want us to be oppressed or wear the chains of heavy burdens on our lives. He wants us to be free of anything that is not of Him that adds extra burden to our lives.

Daniel 3:25 “I see four men loosed, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.”

Could you imagine seeing Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego walkin around in that fiery furnace, which was set to be 7X hotter than normally set? Not only that, but the Son of God walking with them? Wow! They went in bound and God broke their chains of bondage!

Luke 13:11-13 “And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself. 12 And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, ‘Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity.’ 13 And He laid His hands on her: and IMMEDIATELY she was made straight, and glorified God.”

Put yourself in this woman’s shoes. Bowed over for 18 years! What pain her body must have been in, from the contortion, but Jesus healed her and loosened her from the infirmity.

Acts 16:26 “And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s bands were loosed.”

Paul and Silas were in prison and were singing praised unto God at the midnight hour, and all of the prisoners heard them. While they were singing, the earthquake happened and ALL of their bands were loosened. God showed Himself to the prison guard since all of the prisoners stayed were they were instead of fleeing.

God has showed Himself strong in all of the above references. I encourage you to look up each one for yourself and see what happens before or after. If you have any chains of bondage of any kind, whether it be drugs, food, alcohol, pornography, unforgiveness, hatred, distrust, anything that caused extra weight to bare down on your spirit, God is able to break EVERY strand of bondage that is holding you captive. He is already waiting on you to call on Him! Let Him LOOSE you from everything that is keeping you bound.
