Sticky Hands: I  My Crock Pot

Once upon a time I cooked. A lot.

Were it not for my husband this last year, our kitchen would look like this... Easily...

Then I became pregnant with my 5th child. For about 1 year now my poor husband has been running our kitchen. He works all day and then comes home and makes dinner most nights.

I hate it.

Don’t get me wrong, the man can seriously cook. I mean really well too. Some of the best food I’ve ever had! But it’s supposed to be MY job, and I really miss that.

Now that my baby is nearly 4 months old, I’ve been able to take the kitchen back little by little. One way I’ve been doing this is no surprise to those who know me well. My Crock Pot! (Okay, Crock Pots. I have 2…) I can throw dinner in and go on to play with the kids and teach their lessons and maybe even clean a little while dinner prepares itself. Then after, the clean up is simple!

Today I have pork chops covered in cream of mushroom soup and ketchup cooking. I know, sounded disgusting to me too, but I caved and made it another time and it wasn’t bad! Kinda good, actually!

Given that I’m homeschooling and dealing with an infant, I need to rely on my Crock Pot at least 1 or 2 days a week. I’m so happy that it has become trendy again, because now recipes are easier to find! I love making soups, roasts, pasta dishes, dressing, casseroles, meats, taco meat etc… There can never be too many Crock Pot recipes!

So what about you? What is your favorite dish for the slow cooker? Do you have a favorite book or website for recipes? Let’s share!

Sticky Hands: Date Night? Yes, Really. Date Night!

You know how it is. You spend every single day in a rush. You’re doing your best to keep on top of the kids, the house, the errands, the meals, Bible reading, the finances, work, etc. Your husband is exhausted from a long week at work himself, especially if he has a high demanding job like all the ladies here at Raising Sticky Hands To Heaven do. The last thing you think you can possibly find time for is a date night, right? I mean, sure, you have time for you know what here and there, but I mean a real date night.

“But I don’t have a sitter for the kids, and we don’t have the money to go out! And even then we can’t hear each other in the restaurant or we just sit at the movies and stare at a screen, how are we supposed to connect?!”

I’ll tell you how. Have a date night at home. Yes, you read that right. At home.

My husband and I began doing this a few years ago. We feed the kids their dinner at the usual time, put them to bed, and then we have date night. We have a quiet dinner alone, mostly uninterrupted, and then we plan something for the remainder of the night.

Sound like a lot of work? I promise it isn’t. It’s usually a group effort, which makes it fun. We’re working together to aim towards something we will both benefit from! Sure, it takes a little bit of sacrificing. For instance, we usually stay up almost all night when we have date night, meaning it’s a LONG day the next day. But we both agree that it is worth it.

So how exactly do we plan this out? Well, it’s different every time. Usually one of us makes dinner and the other one plans an activity. By activity, I mean something creative and fun. Occasionally we will have a “theme”. (Oh, and the activity is kept secret from the other one usually… unless we just have a night of music and talking. Then we’re upfront.) One night I brought in Scrabble and set the rule that the words could only have something to do with our relationship. Another night he set up our living room to feel like we were in a cabin in the mountains. We’ve had “casino night” and “truth or dare”. Once I even planned a beach night! It goes on and on… The key is to keep it light, fun, and flexible. You never know when one of the kids might wake up, so be cautious of that also.

I can’t take all the credit for this, I did get the idea from a book/kit that we purchased. I’ll post some links at the bottom of this post for you to check them out, but I wanted to still give you some ideas just in case you couldn’t afford to buy the products… (Though if you can, I seriously recommend them. Yeah, some of the idea cards are a little cheesy… but they’ll help you come up with your own ideas and the questionnaires will help you get to know each other better.)

So, if you and your hubster are in a rut, bored, or everything is great but you just think this sounds fun, go for it! And if you want, come back and tell us what ideas you had! (Keep the personal details to yourself, please. 😉 ) And remember, having a date night with your husband does NOT make you a bad mother. It makes you a good one! (And for the single mommies, you’re all still excellent moms. I hope you find no offense in this post.)

No Time For Sissies!

Lets start this by saying this week has been one whirlwind of events. The sickness in our church has taken a toll on me. Saying I have been discouraged is an understatement. So I decided it was time to get specific with my prayer, this was no time for sissy prayers.

I let God in on what my heart has been feeling, stating to him that I need to see the hand of God move. After months of praying up against brick walls and seeing nothing happen , it was time for hitting the knees and telling Him I need more. One can only endure so much, and that was where I was.

I don’t believe I was alone in my feelings. For the last couple years we have seen more sickness, the most some have endured in a lifetime. To say the least we have been attacked by the enemy, and it was time to take back what he has stolen from us. I can definitely say when Dean was, frustration filled me to the core. Standing back with sissy prayers was not going to be acceptable. What we needed was a team of serious prayer warriors standing in the gap for a brother in Christ, and that’s exactly what we got.

I love the living testimony of people walking by seeing where we put our trust. In our Lord and savior, the only true physician who could heal beyond what any man could do. I pray those people know where real healings come from.

I never doubt what my God can do, I may get discouraged but He is still in the healing business, and that is what I stand on. Promises of a God that cannot lie, and will not lie. I know for a fact that Dean is on his way to a full recovery. Tonite I sat in his chair and asked God to restore him back to a wholeness of wellness. In the name of Jesus I prayed for every illness Dean has, from allergies to back pain. Get ready Dean your gonna be better then ever, like I said,

You will arise and go forth, in the name of the Lord of host, for he has conquered every foe by his name, by his name, I will declare he is the Lord I will trust and not be afraid I will arise and go forth by his name…………….

I put my faith in God, he came thru once again. Amen……………..I love you Lord, and again I give you the praise…..

Young Love

Young Love
By: Diania Comstock
July, 1986

A boy and a girl ran off to wed
They didn’t expect what lied ahead
Happy and excited, though only sixteen
They had no idea what marriage could mean

A few months later, things started to change
The girl sat at home and the boy acted strange
Days went by when he wasn’t around
She began to wonder if it was new love he had found

The girl decided it’s time to get out
Then she learned what families are about
Soon she won’t be home all alone
In a few months, she’ll bring a new member home

She told the boy, she thought he’d be glad
He just started screaming, she knew he was mad
She won’t give up now, she decided to stay
If it was to work, she’d find a way

Times were hard and money was tight
But the girl was strong, she knew she was right
Months went by, she started to show
And now even Daddy was starting to glow

All he talked about was having a son
And he wanted to prove it to everyone
A year has passed since the new baby came
But this one didn’t get daddy’s name

Still running around and out having fun
This time she decided, we are done
She left him a letter with his ring beside it
It’s over this time, I’m not going to hide it

She thought of her mother, how she’d like to go home
But mother had told her you’re now on your own
Her friends couldn’t help her, they had their own life
And now she was sorry she became a wife

What would she do and where would she go
Just like before, she was starting to show
Now a mommy and still very young
She started to realize what she had done

Tears started falling, she tried not to cry
She thought of the boy, how could he lie
She went back home and found her man
There he sit with the ring in his hand

He started to kiss her, he thought she was gone
He told her he loved her and where she belonged
With life back in order and a home full of joy
The family will welcome their new little boy

Temptation and trust must fill the heart
Without the two, they’ll be torn apart
Love is something that needs to grow
Both husband and wife play a big role

How To Build Your Own Lemonade Stand: When Life Gives You Lemons & God Makes Lemonade

We’ve all heard the old saying:

“When life gives you lemons, make lemonade…”

What does this mean exactly? Basically, to take something sour & bitter and turn it into something sweet. A negative into a positive. As Christians, we deal with this on a different level as we are to spread God’s love to a dying world.

In every day situations, this may be easy to do. But what about when the unthinkable happens? Something so traumatic, that finding the pros is completely impossible when there are so many cons lined up against you? It becomes difficult to find the good with the bad, and to show love and be positive to others when we feel so full of hurt/anger/sadness and negativity.

I’ll be the first to say, this is not my favorite subject to write about. It has taken me a long time to learn this lesson myself. But when God says “write”, by golly, you better write.

So, from here we will begin a Tuesday series. I hope you’ll follow along and read what the Lord has told me to write and be blessed.

When God Says No…

We’ve all been there. Had a need, want, or wish that we prayed for fervently. Begging God to just let this one thing go our way. Only to find that God didn’t agree, and just flat out said “NO!”

Naturally, sometimes as humans we become upset. We don’t understand WHY God would ever not grant us the wishes of our heart. “Doesn’t God want me to be happy?” we ask, assuming that God couldn’t possibly know our side of it.

As difficult as it can be, the key to remember is that God is all knowing. He sees the big picture, not just the here and now like we see it. Of course he wants the best for us! But just as our children think cookies make a good meal, we know better. He doesn’t want us to settle for less.

When I was young, and I mean YOUNG, there was something I prayed for. I could NOT understand why God was not giving me what I wanted. Surely He knew the dream I had from the time I was a tot, why wouldn’t He just give it to me? I’ll tell you why: because it was not His will. He had something so much better in store for me. I didn’t understand it at the time, but boy do I now! And let me just say Thank You LORD for not giving in to my stupidity! 😉

It does not always go this way. Sometimes the reason our prayers go unanswered is not clear. It is not for us to know while we are here on earth, but as the old song says “We’ll understand it better by and by…” In the mean time, thank our Heavenly Father for loving us enough to say “no” instead of spoiling us. For were it not for the “nos”, we wouldn’t be thankful when He says, “YES!”

Everyday Miracles

Okay, I know we are all guilty of this. Sure, there are mothers out there who are not. However, the simple fact that you are reading this post right now tells me you don’t fit into that small lump of women. What am I talking about?

Putting yourself last.

Diania snapped this photo of me at church last Sunday evening. I'm still not sure why no one would let me pray with them during the altar call... Their loss.

For some of you, it may just be a few areas in your life. For me, it’s ALL areas. My laundry is done last, my doctor’s appointments are put off and then cancelled, my preferences take a back seat to that of my family’s, and my kids are always dressed cute while my husband is looking handsome and I look like some hobo clown that broke in and photo bombed the family photo.

A few weeks ago I decided something needed to change. I told my husband that for my birthday next month I wanted to get my hair cut. Nothing special, just cut. “No problem!” he replied! But the biggest dilemma was that I desperately needed clothes. I’ve had 3 babies in less than 3 1/2 years. As a result I’ve put on weight and my structure has changed. (We’ll leave it at that, sounds nicer.) To say “I need a few things” is an understatement.

Last week I prayed two separate times for new clothes. Just twice. I didn’t mention my prayers to anyone, though I’m sure my need was obvious to those who looked upon me. I figured all I really needed was 2 or 3 outfits to rotate when I need to leave the house looking decently. We’re talking bare necessities here. I decided I would save up some pennies and either hit up some yard sales or visit a few thrift stores next month. In the mean time, I stopped praying. I thought of all of those in worse situations and felt as though I was being ungrateful. I would just make do with what I had.

Then yesterday I received a call from one of my closest friends, Crystal. Her parents own a dry cleaning business and was visiting them at their store. She wanted to know what size clothing I wear. I couldn’t imagine why, and while I did NOT want to admit to my skinny mini friend what my large size was, I answered the question. She then went on to tell me that a customer had recently lost a great deal of weight and asked her Dad to find someone that could use the clothes. To say I was shocked and excited is an understatement. Today I went through the clothes. All name brands. Really nice things, for all seasons. We’re not talking about a few things, we’re talking about an entire wardrobe. Most amazing thing of all? Each item fits perfectly. Nothing too big or too small.

My God Provides!!!

Another everyday miracle: The fact that these kids all sat long enough to take this photo.

It is the everyday miracles like this that prove that God loves his children. The need for clothing, having children all nap at once so Mom can pray, the weather being just right so the family can get out and go for a walk, talking to the right representative on an important call, the kids getting along, the wrinkles on a baby’s foot, being treated to a nice dinner, and so many other ways. Now don’t get me wrong: terminal illnesses being healed and such are proof also. But the fact that God knew the need even though it wasn’t necessarily needed to survive and fulfilled the prayer speaks volumes. He loves me so much that he didn’t want me to be embarrassed when I leave the house. He knew that I needed just a smidgen of attention to refresh my appearance so that I could better care for my family.

If God cares so much about our everyday problems to perform everyday miracles, imagine what else he can do? Instead of looking at the big problems in your life, look at the little miracles. The everyday works that God does for you. Never forget to say “thank you”, and have faith. He’s not done with us yet!

Your Call Will Be Answered In Approximately 437 Minutes…

Sometimes it seems as though I’ve been on hold since this phone was originally in use…

Thank you for holding!

I just want to take a moment to mention how thankful I am that God does not answer our prayers in the order which they were received, but in his time.

Further more, I’m glad that my matters are all in his hands, instead of someone at a call center who gets to randomly decide what is important and what is not.

To take it one step more with that statement, I’m even more grateful that God decides what is important, what is urgent, what can wait, and what should be ignored.

What it must be like to see it all from the big picture, and know the need before it is needed… To know what seems so important to us is actually rather insignificant… To see what we view as “URGENT” and know that it can actually wait, or vice versa.

I’m so glad I’m not in charge.  And no offense, but I’m so glad you’re not in charge either!
